ProFauna School Visit in Ternate, North Maluku
In the end of 2012, ProFauna North Maluku Representative visited some schools in the area to promote parrot conservation to the students. One the schools was the Vocational High School (SMKN) 1 Ternate City coinciding the scout camping. During the visit, ProFauna played a conservation film entitled "Voices of North Maluku People" featuring leaders of the local people and religious communities delivering parrot conservation messages. After the film screening, ProFauna representative led an informal discussion about parrot conservation with the students.
More than 30 students attended the event and they enjoyed the discussion. One of the students, Handayani, raised an interesting question, "Why our parrots are poached and smuggled to Java?" While another student named Ridwan stated, "As a child of North Maluku, I am sad because many parrots are poached from the wild of North Maluku. If there are no parrots here, we are the ones who lost."
ProFauna in North Maluku considers it very important to educate the young generation on parrot conservation because the birds are the natural heritage of North Maluku. The youn generation will play important role in wildlife conservation in the Province. For these reasons, ProFauna will continue the education programmes in the schools and villages in North Maluku.
