“Mr. President of Indonesia, Please Save the Leuser Ecosystem!”

The Leuser ecosystem in Sumatra is a vital area for the people and wildlife of Sumatra. It is home for many endangered wildlife species like the Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus ), Sumatran Tiger (Panthera tigris sumatraensis)Sumatran Rhino (Dicherorinus sumatraensis), and Sumateran Elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus). Leuser also holds the largest number of species in Asia, with no less than 105 mammal species, 382 birds species, as well as 95 reptiles and amphibians.

PROFAUNA kampanye save LeuserThe ugly truth is that the Leuser ecosystem, which is shared by the provinces of Aceh and North Sumatra, is prone to be damaged and perish due to the policies that permit land clearing for various purposes such as mining, palm oil plantation, or logging.

Protection of Forest and Fauna (PROFAUNA) as a grassroots organization supported by thousands of our members endorses the campaign to save the leuser ecosystem. PROFAUNA urges the President of Indonesia, Mr. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, to declare a protection policy for Leuser before the end of his term, as what he had promised to the international world.

The day of September 22 in every year has been appointed as the International Day of Action to Save Leuser. On this day, PROFAUNA encourages our supporters and the general public to sign this petition:
