Fight against Tiger Trafficking: Three Dealers Arrested in Jambi

The fight against tiger trafficking is still on. Authorities are working hard to stop poaching and trade of the Sumatran Tiger. In Jambi, police just arrested three tiger dealers. This information was received by PROFAUNA Indonesia from a ranger immediately after the operation.

On Tuesday (18/10/2016) officials from Jambi Natural Resource Conservation Agency, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, and Jambi Police Department arrested three alleged tiger dealers, Edi Kumala bin Ahmad, Yusuf bin Masri, and Saimah binti Abdullah at Jalan Mayjend Sutoyo, District of Telanai Pura, Jambi.

Officials also confiscated evidences including two pieces of Sumatran Tiger skin and a van (plate number BD 1715 B). Following the raid, the joint team searched a warehouse owned by the suspects in Bukit Baling, Sengeti. They found 20 boxes containing skins of snakes skin, monitor lizards, and crocodiles along with several permit documents.

The team continued the investigation with a search in a house located at Ibrahim Talang Banjar, Jambi, from where the tiger skins came from. One of the suspects, Edi Kumala, confessed that he bought the skins from a man named Aliang who stays in that house, although the search resulted in nothing.

The three suspects are liable to 5 years of prison and IDR 100 million fines, as stated in Article 40 Law no.5 of 1990 concerning the Conservation of Living Natural Resource and Its Ecosystem.
