ProFauna Goes to Schools in Bali to Promote Sea Turtles Conservation
Since May 2013, ProFauna has been actively conducting educational programs on sea turtles conservation at schools in Bali. Most of the schools are located around Perancak Beach, District of Jembrana, which is the main habitat of sea turtles in Bali Island. The audio-visual presentations to introduce sea turtle species, as well as their threats and conservation efforts, have given limpid illustrations to the participating students.
The educational visits by ProFauna were warmly welcomed by both the teachers and students. Even though many of them live close to the shore, their knowledge about sea turtles conservation is very lacking. ProFauna's presentations have enlightened the young generations, who will be the future sea stakeholder of the existence of sea turtles. Wayan Putra, one of the students said, "I just knew from ProFauna that plastic trash can be very harmful for sea turtles."
I am very happy to be able to share my knowledge with these children about sea turtles conservation, let alone they have received very little information about it," Bayu Sandi, ProFauna's campaign officer added. "ProFauna believes that education for the youngsters is very important for the future of sea turtles. Therefore, ProFauna will keep on giving education to the local people in Bali."
The educational programs are inherent with the conservation program in Perancak, Bali, which has been run by ProFauna together with Kurma Asih community. Kurma Asih has been working on sea turtles conservation for years, and since the collaboration with ProFauna the programs have improved, though some matters still need enhancements particularly the sea turtles management.
Currently our sea turtle conservation program is supported by Born Free Foundation and Humane Society International Australia.
