Rangers Rescued 10 Parrots in Ternate

Rangers from the Nature Conservation Agency Area I, North Maluku, rescued 10 lories and cockatoos in Ternate, North Maluku, in a raid held on 20-23 August 2014. Among the birds confiscated were Eclectus parrot, Chattering lory, Yellow-crested cockatoo, White cockatoo, and Black-capped lory. They were previously kept by people who do not possess official permit.

Eka Ka'aba, the coordinator of PROFAUNA's Ternate chapter said "PROFAUNA highly appreciates this successful effort to rescue the illegally owned birds." PROFAUNA recorded that the parrot trade in North Maluku is still rampant, as not only the birds are sold in the country, but they are also exported overseas.

The rescued birds are now given treatments in the Nature Conservation Agency's office. If possible, they would be released to their natural habitat immediately. "Considering the high level of parrot ownership and trade in North Maluku, we hope that in the future the government could provide a more decent temporary shelter to take care of the confiscated animals before they can be released," concluded Eka.
