PROFAUNA Receives Letters from Students on National Teacher Day

Right on the National Teacher Day which is celebrated on 25 November 2015, PROFAUNA Indonesia's headquarters received letters from 6th grade students of SDN (public elementary school) Muara Medak, Bayung Lincir district, Musi Banyuasin, South Sumatra. All 34 letters were handwritten by the students under the guidance of Gading Aulia, a participant of Indonesia Mengajar program.

Gading, who started his term on June 2015, assigned his students to write a letter to Swasti Prawidya Mukti, PROFAUNA's campaign officer.

"Education should be an exciting ground without any pressure, as told by Ki Hajar Dewantara," said Gading in his own letter. "Just like when the students were learning about the environment and its conservation, this pen pals method is expected to make the learning process become even more effective in helping the students understanding their environment."

Here are some interesting lines from the letters:

How do we save the animals? Aren't you afraid of going into the forest?

In our place, there are many animals going extinct because of the fires.

Our place is quite strange. During the dry season people often feel sad because it is hard to find water

There are lots of monkeys and birds here, but they only go out when I'm at school.

The situation hasn't been normal yet since the massive fires. Many people had to be evacuated, and the smokes made us sick.

I love that animals are being conserved. If they go extinct, the world will be so quiet.

From the letters, it is apparent that they live close to the nature. Unfortunately, their natural environment has been corrupted by the fires. Also, the students' understanding about forest and wildlife conservation is still relatively low.

"We will reply these letters and send along some educational materials to be used there," said Swasti.

PROFAUNA's founder, Rosek Nursahid, added that education is an essential part in forest and wildlife conservation efforts. PROFAUNA supports anybody who would educate the general public about the importance of forest and wildlife conservation.
