Learning About Biodiversity Through Adventures in the P-WEC Educational Forest

The P-WEC Educational Forest (Petungsewu Wildlife Education Center), in collaboration with the PROFAUNA Indonesia Foundation, held a nature education activity called the 2nd Biodiversity Exploration on January 3, 2026, at the P-WEC Forest in Malang Regency. This activity attracted public interest, as such events are relatively rare. Participants came from Malang, Batu, Pasuruan, Sidoarjo, Kediri, and Jember.

A total of 40 participants were invited to learn about biodiversity through fun adventure activities. The activities included bird watching, identifying rare trees, and learning about tree nursery management. All activities took place at the P-WEC Educational Forest, which is located at an altitude of 800 meters above sea level.

The P-WEC Educational Forest is home to over 130 tree species and 50 bird species. One of the most attractive tree groups is the Ficus (banyan family), of which there are 14 species in the P-WEC Educational Forest. These Ficus trees are favored by wildlife, as well as providing valuable hydrological benefits and carbon storage.

"We want to encourage the public to learn more about biodiversity, but in a fun way, so we packaged the event as an exploration and adventure," said Made Astuti, Director of the P-WEC Educational Forest.

The diverse tree species in the P-WEC Forest provide habitat for various bird species. Participants were fortunate enough to spot an Asian honey buzzard perched in a tree during the event. Other eagle species that have visited the P-WEC Educational Forest include the Javan hawk-eagle, the serpent eagle, and the black eagle.
