Introducing Forest Conservation to Children through Games

Activists of the Protection of Forest & Fauna (PROFAUNA) Indonesia engaged students of SD Baitul Makmur (elementary school) in a game about forest and water conservation. The educational activity took place at Malabar City Forest on Friday, 11 November 2016.

To spice up the occasion, PROFAUNA's activists played a fun game with the children. Each student received a secret card and a worksheet. In the worksheet, there was a 5 by 5 grid each containing a statement related to forest and water conservation.

Each student had to match the statements in the boxes with their friends' secret cards. When they find a match, they must cross the box in their worksheet. Their goal was to have five boxes crossed in a row, either horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.

The first five students who could make a row in their worksheet received a sticker from PROFAUNA. After the game finished, PROFAUNA's activists discussed the message learned from the game, especially about the importance of forest conservation to maintain water supply.

The students were very enthusiastic during the whole activity. During the discussion, they raised many questions like "How can a city forest like this place prevent flood?"

We would like to thank PROFAUNA's activists who conducted this program, and the teachers of SD Baitul Makmur who had provided us an opportunity to share our knowledge with their wonderful students!
