Illegal Wildlife Dealer Arrested by the Police of Jember

Team from the Natural Resource Conservation Agency (Balai Konservasi Sumber Daya Alam/BKSDA) and the police of Jember, with some assistance from ProFauna's Ranger seized an illegal wildlife dealer in Jember, East Java, along with dozens of animals as the evidences on Thursday (3/4/2014). From the man named Maulana, the officers confiscated 12 protected wildlife species such as a baby Javan Langur, Eaglets, Falcon fledglings, and Giant Squirrels. Those animals were rescues from his house at Kalimantan street, Jember, East Java.

Maulana used to promote his goods on Facebook by an account named Jalu Cakra. Using that account, he advertised a Javan Langur for IDR 1.5 million. He claimed that he usually deliver the animals to different locations in Indonesia by a railway cargo service.

alap-alapAfter a 2-months surveillance, the team finally could take him into custody. Apparently, Maulana a.k.a Jalu Cakra kept tens of traded animals in his house, though not all were displayed. He and all of the animals were brought rightaway to Jember Police Station for further investigation.

The head of the Natural Resource Conservation Agency at Region III East Java, Sunandar Tri Gunajasa, said "The arrest of this wildlife dealer is a positive progress in our effort to slow down the ever-speeding extinction of Indonesian wildlife." ProFauna Indonesia's campaign officer, Bayu Sandi, added "ProFauna hopes that he would receive appropriate punishment according to the law, because it is clear that anybody who trade protected wildlife species shall be liable to 5 years of prison and IDR 100 million fines."
