Coffee Seedling Assistance for Local Communities on the Slopes of Mount Arjuna for the agroforestry program

PROFAUNA Indonesia provided coffee seedlings for the agroforestry program carried out by local communities on the slopes of Mount Arjuna. Forest farmers Subandi and Sukadi received 300 seedlings on Tuesday (June 2, 2026) at the PROFAUNA Indonesia office.

Previously, PROFAUNA had provided 1,000 coffee seedlings to other local communities growing coffee on the slopes of Mount Arjuna. The seedlings provided were Arabica coffee grown by PROFAUNA Indonesia and Petungsewu Adventure.

"We thank PROFAUNA for providing high-quality coffee seedlings that will help the community improve their economy while also preserving the forest," said forest farmer Subandi.

The coffee seedlings will be planted in the social forestry area managed by the Wonomulyo Forest Farmers Group (KTH) on the slopes of Mount Arjuna. Since 2021, PROFAUNA has been assisting the Wonomulyo Forest Management Group (KTH) in sustainably managing its forests.

Previously, most local communities on the slopes of Mount Arjuna grew vegetables such as cabbage, carrots, and potatoes. Vegetable cultivation in this steeply sloped forest area is prone to flooding and landslides. Therefore, PROFAUNA encouraged farmers to shift their focus from growing vegetables to growing fruit trees and coffee.

PROFAUNA's invitation was initially difficult to accept, as vegetable crops can be harvested within months, while coffee takes several years to yield a harvest. However, with a persistent approach and evidence that coffee plants have good economic value, local communities have begun growing coffee.

To support the local community's agroforestry program, PROFAUNA, in collaboration with Petungsewu Adventure, manages a coffee nursery in Malang. The resulting seedlings are then distributed free of charge to local residents in need. Furthermore, the coffee nursery serves as an educational resource for those interested in learning about tree cultivation.

PROFAUNA Indonesia founder Rosek Nursahid said, "It's impossible to preserve forests without involving local communities living around or even within the forest area. This agroforestry program is one way to foster collaboration with local communities."

Between the coffee plants, there are still stands of pine trees and other types of trees. It has been proven on the slopes of Mount Arjuna that coffee plants can produce a good harvest even under pine trees.
