BRI Life and PROFAUNA Help Forest Farmers Restore Degraded Forests

BRI Life is once again collaborating with PROFAUNA Indonesia to restore forest ecosystems through a reforestation program in South Malang. Contributing to this forest ecosystem restoration is the provision of 500 tree seedlings to forest farmers in Tambakrejo Village, Sumbermanjing Wetan District, Malang Regency, on November 27, 2025.

The tree seedlings distributed to the forest farmers include mango, soursop, durian, and jackfruit. The seedlings were planted in a social forestry area managed by the Maju Mapan Forest Farmers Group.
Previously, the area where the fruit trees were to be planted was vacant land that had been deforested. The existing plantations were only coconut trees, so it was necessary to supplement the planting with other tree species with economic value.

"We hope that the provision of fruit tree seedlings will restore the forest's function, as the plants we are planting are woody. In addition to its ecological value, we also hope it will provide an economic benefit to the local community, through the harvest of the fruit," said Rosek Nursahid, an ecologist at PROFAUNA.

The collaboration between PROFAUNA and BRI Life for this forest rehabilitation has been ongoing for four years, starting in 2022. Each year, BRI Life provides approximately 500 tree seedlings to the local community.

PROFAUNA's assistance to forest farmers in Sumbermanjing Wetan has been ongoing since 2019. With PROFAUNA's support, parts of the previously bare forest have begun to reforest with fruit trees.

"On behalf of the farmers, I would like to thank PROFAUNA and BRI Life for their continued assistance. Without the assistance of high-quality tree seedlings from BRI Life, it would be difficult for us to achieve forest restoration," said Sugianto, a local community representative in South Malang.
